This spring, my family and I traveled west and did what I like to call “A seriously LONG, but rewarding, Road Trip”. Some of us had been out west before, others had not. What we saw and experienced is really indescribable. Zion National Park in Utah was one of our destinations. I can tell you this, pictures have a hard time accurately portraying the vast beauty of Utah. It’s a place I think everyone should see once in their lifetime. The rich colors, terrain, wildlife, rocks and landscaping is different from anything I’ve seen before. I think I saw maybe one patch of grass.
I’ll never forget spending three days hiking and exploring in Zion National Park. Hiking six miles in sand with major elevation gain is not super fun. The view at the top was well worth the sweat and tears, though. One day, my Dad, sister and I, drove around the park and let the winding (scary as heck) roads lead us to wherever. No plan, but just to take it in and enjoy it with each other.
I don’t know if I’ll ever take a road trip like this one again. As I’m sitting here typing and remembering the goodness we experienced, I’m starting to get nostalgic. I miss it a lot, but I am very thankful our family had this opportunity. A lot of good times and even a few bad times. Road trips with your people, though, are worth leaving three hours behind schedule, arguing, indecisive decisions on where to eat, sleeping in one room, achy legs, car sickness, and my personal favorite, portable bathrooms. I can’t tell you how many times those were used on this trip. It’s good to experience it all together.
The bottom line is this: If your family wants to take a twenty-seven hour road trip to Utah and then to California, you should say “yes“.
